Pros And Cons Of The Iraq War

There are many pros and cons of the Iraq war though most people have the tendency to look just at the cons and pass judgment. However, one should weigh both the pros and cons of the Iraq war and then come to a conclusion.

Pros of Iraq War:
The most popular advantage of Iraq war is that Saddam Hussein is no longer in power. If the war had not taken place then the Iraqi people would have still been suffering under the totalitarian rule; having injustice, brutality and barbarism, which was the fate of Iraqi people from 1979 to 2003.

The Iraq war has managed to bring some sort of regional security to the Middle East. When Saddam Hussein was in power, he invaded Iran in 1980 and Kuwait in 1990. He also launched missiles against Saudi Arabia and Israel. If Saddam has remained in power, the possibility of him aggressing was high and it is quite possible that he would have impeded the oil routes.

Saddam Hussein had links with the Al Qaeda and he had chemical weapons that he deployed against his own people in 1988, killing approximately 5,000.

Cons of Iraq War:
The war has killed many American soldiers and wounded and injured thousand others. It has also managed to devastate Iraq’s infrastructure.

The Iraq war is costing American taxpayers trillions of dollars and until now the long-term monetary costs are still uncertain. The money that America is spending on Iraq war could have been better utilized for rebuilding Afghanistan and on homeland security.

The attitude of the rest of the world against the United State has deteriorated tremendously. Iraq war has inflamed international hostility towards America and Americans.

Moslem unrest has increased all over the world because of the Iraq war. There is a sharp radicalization not just in Moslem majority countries but also in Western countries like the UK.

Many anti-war supporters and campaigners believe that the Iraq war has become a catalyst for recruitment for many Islamic terrorist organizations.

Conclusion:
There is no doubt that the world is a much safer place without Saddam Hussein but is also a more divided place after the Iraq war. Many governments of the coalition countries have succeeded militarily but have failed politically. The Iraq war has brought both positives and negatives with it; we now have to choose what we want.
