Revolutionary War Vs Iraq War

The Revolutionary War in America was from 1775 to 1783 and it led to the birth of a new nation -- the United States of America. The Revolutionary War started on April 19, 1775 when the battles of Lexington and Concord began.

For nearly a decade before the Revolutionary War broke out, tensions between the American colonies and Great Britain were gradually increasing. The British government has passed a series of laws in order to increase their control over the colonies, which the Americans did not like. The Americans were used to having control over their local government and objected to the new laws and the taxes they are being forced to pay without their consent. Massachusetts was the heart of most of the protests and in 1775, the British parliament declared Massachusetts to be in rebellion and British troops were placed in Boston to take actions against the so-called rebels. Shortly after this, the Revolutionary War broke out.

Initially the American colonies were not prepared for the war. They did not have a central government and neither did they have an organized army nor navy. This led to the formation of the first Continental Congress that took over the duties of a national government. The Congress directed the war effort and voted to organize an army and navy to face the British might. The British troops won many battles but gain little from their victories. The American patriots always ended up forming new forces and continued fighting the British.

The Revolutionary War ended with the Treaty of Paris in 1783 and Great Britain was forced to recognize the independence of the 13 colonies of the United States.

In modern times, the Iraq War is an ongoing conflict which started on March 20, 2003 when the United States led an invasion into Iraq and named it Operation Iraqi Freedom. The rationale be the Iraq war was that the country possessed weapons of mass destruction and posed a threat to the United States and its allies.

The leaders and diplomats from countries on the U.N. Security Council were not in favor of the Iraq war but United States and George W Bush did not want to wait until threat from Saddam Hussein became a reality and proceeded with the war.

The U.S. led coalition attempted to establish a new democratic government but failed to restore order in Iraq and this has led to guerilla warfare, civil war between the Sunni Moslems and Shia, and Al-Qaeda increasing its operations in Iraq.

What was seen as a war for freedom, similar to the great Revolutionary War, has become controversial. The public opinion has led to many coalition nations withdrawing their troops from Iraq while the U.S. is increasing its troops even though the American people are against the war and killings.
