There was never a doubt that when the U.S. and its allies started waging a war on terrorism, it was going to be a long drawn one.

The war on terrorism is unlikely to be a short war because of various factors. However, the most important factor is that the war on terrorism is not about eliminating a person or a group. It is about eliminating an idea, which is not possible at the moment.
The people who perpetuate terrorism or acts of terrorism are following a dream and hence, they do not care what happens to them. They believe what they are doing is right and the only way forward. To change this thought process can be extremely difficult if not impossible.
No time frame can be set on the war on terrorism. It is something that can go on for years to come and will affect a lot of countries and people.
Many governments in the Middle East and certain other countries are playing a double game. On one hand they are cooperating with Western intelligence and covert military efforts and on the other hand they are giving financial and other support to the terrorists which are further inflaming their radical instincts against the Americans and Jews.
That is why the war on terrorism is not likely to be a short war. However, it is going to take long to get results from war on terrorism because of the controversy still surrounding the invasion of Iraq as no weapons of mass destruction were found.
