US Grand Strategy Global War On Terrorism

During the last 10 years the United States has been the target of lethal attacks that have not just affected the US citizens but also America’s interests around the world.

After the 2001 attack on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, President George Bush propagated the Grand Strategy to fight a Global War on Terrorism. The US Grand Strategy involved the usage of all elements of national power, diplomatic informational military and economics to defeat terrorism not just at home but also abroad.

Though the US Grand Strategy has drawn a lot of flak from different critics, the Bush administration’s policies have been more or less successful in minimizing the impact of terrorist organizations on the US. Many believe the Iraq war is deterrent enough for countries who are supporting terrorist groups.

However, on the other hand, the US Grand Strategy and global war on terrorism has little or no understanding of the enemy the US-led coalition is fighting. Al Qaeda is a splinter faction consisting of militant Islamists who are hell bent on establishing Islamic rule in Muslim countries through armed action. Similar to Al Qaeda there are many militant Islamist groups scattered all over the Muslim and Western world. The militants have spent over 40 years refining their philosophy and gaining experience. They have no qualms about harming innocent civilians in their attempt to build an Islamic world and they are all united in their fanatical hatred of America.

To a certain extent, the US Grand Strategy and global war on terrorism has been successful in overthrowing Al Qaeda from Afghanistan. However, the US-led coalition force is facing stiff resistance in Iraq with many soldiers and civilians losing their lives or getting injured.
