In 1946, Jimmy Carter received a Bachelor’s degree from United States Naval Academy and he became a submariner in the U.S. Navy and rose to the rank of lieutenant, senior grade.
When Carter’s father passed way in 1953, he resigned from the Navy and returned to his family home in Plains, Georgia. He then operated Carter’s Warehouse, a general purpose seed and farm supply company until he was elected to the Georgia Senate in 1962. He became Georgia’s 76th governor in 1971.
In 1971, Jimmy Carter announced his candidacy for the President of the United States and he was elected in November 1976 as the Democratic Party nominee. Carter served as the president from 1977 to 1981.
After his stint as the president, Jimmy Carter started helping the government with certain global issues. And, he has written a number of books touching topics like human rights, and democracy. His latest book titled Palestine: Peace, Not Apartheid has created quite a furor and is not popular with pro-Israeli supporters. On the other hand, the book has found favor with those who are anti-Israel because of the term “apartheid” in the title.
For years, anti-Israeli propaganda has been trying equate the situation in Israel with the apartheid era of South Africa. Although, Carter clearly mentions towards the end of the book that the term apartheid was not meant literally and the situation in Israel has nothing do with racism. It is all about acquisition of land.
Many critics of the book have already ripped the contents apart because of the inaccuracies in the book. Many have questioned the authenticity of the book and questions are being raised about all the activities undertaken by Carter in his post-president era.
Jimmy Carter has always been a good friend of many dictators including Fidel Castro, Saddam Hussein, Nicolae Ceaucescu, Ferdinand Marcos, Kim Jong II to name a few. In addition, Carter is quite famous for meddling current politics via his Carter Center and undermining the foreign policies of both Republicans and Democrats.
Jimmy Carter has been labeled as one of the worst ex-U.S. presidents.
