Reasons Why Franklin Pierce Is One Of The Worst President
|
It was Arthur Schlesinger Sr. who in 1948 asked 55 historians to rank U.S. presidents and ever since it is being done by people who study the American past.

Most changes of American president rankings are based on how people, primarily the historians, viewed history and continue viewing even today. That is why in the 1940s when ranking was done, President Andrew Johnson, a white supremacist, was ranked high which is not the case today. Abraham Lincoln, George Washington and Franklin D. Roosevelt feature in the great list; while Franklin Pierce along with Andrew Johnson, James Buchanan, Warren G Harding, Calvin Coolidge and Richard Nixon are ranked as one the worst presidents that United States ever had.
Pierce is ranked as one of the worst presidents of America because he served at the time of national crisis and was simply not up to the job. He was considered as stubborn, narrow-minded, unwilling to listen to criticism and was never willing to consider alternatives to the disastrous mistakes he made.
Franklin Pierce surrounded himself with sycophants and shaped his policies to appeal to pro-slavery and racist ideologues. Even after he was rebutted in the midterm elections of 1854, Pierce refused to take note of public opinion and insisted on clinging on to his flawed policies.
Many people who now look at George W Bush and his policies draw a lot of parallels between the Franklin Pierce and the current president of America. Historians rank Franklin Pierce as one of the worst presidents of the United States and for sure George W Bush will come a close second if not a leading contender.
